It is reasonable to assume that if the bene ts of data mining and correlating data from multiple sources become widely recognised, more data will be available in shared, often public, repositories. This wealth of data has enormous potential. Frequently, data contains information relevant to many more topics than the speci c science, engineering or medicine that motivated its original collection and determined its structure. If we are able to compose and study these large collections of data for correlations and anomalies, they may yield an era of rapid scienti c, technological and medical progress. But discovering the valuable knowledge from the mountains of data is well beyond unaided human capacity. Sophisticated computational approaches must be developed. Their application will require the skills of scientists, engineers, computer scientists, statisticians and many other experts. Our challenge is to enable both the development of the sophisticated computation and the collaboration of all of those who should steer it. The whole process must be attainable by the majority of scientists, sustainable within a typical economy and trustable by scientists, politicians and the general public. Developing the computational approaches and the practices that exploit them will surely be one of the major differentiated domains of e-Science support. The challenge of making good use of growing volumes of diverse data is not exclusive to science and medicine. In government, business, administration, health care, the arts and humanities, we may expect to see similar challenges and similar advantages in mastering those challenges. Basing decisions, judgements and understanding on reliable tests against trustworthy data must bene t industrial, commercial, scienti c and social goals. It requires an infrastructure to support the sharing, integration, federation and analysis of data.

To see how drilling down works, follow these steps: 1. Double-click any of the cells in the Values area (defined as the cell range B5 E27) to drill down on the full dataset that makes up a particular cell. In Figure 2-20, I ve double-clicked cell B15. Each time you open a new file, Dreamweaver temporarily names the file Untitled-n, where n is the next number in sequence. This naming convention prevents you from accidentally overwriting a new file opened in the same session.

For many designers, positioning has increased creativity in page layout design. With positioning, you have exact control over where an element is placed on a page. The positioning attributes are often applied to div tags to create page layouts without resorting to tables. Figure 7-17 shows the various attributes that provide this pinpoint control of your page elements. The options are described in Table 7-7.

By default, new history states are added from the top down: oldest history states at the top and newest at the bottom. If you select a history state, all states that follow are dimmed and then deleted when you apply an edit. The new history state is then appended below the currently selected state. This method allows new histories to be added linearly. However, there is a downside to working in a linear history mode: When you delete a state, all states that follow will also be deleted. If you prefer to hedge your bets and keep all the history states, you can force Photoshop to work in a nonlinear history mode. In this mode, when you select a history state and apply edits to the image, the new state will be added to the bottom of the list and the states that follow the targeted state won t be deleted. To set nonlinear history mode, choose History Options from the palette menu and then select Allow Non-Linear History (Figure 3-22).
